In the fall of 2024, something began to shift in Rockport. It was not loud or flashy. It started quietly—meetings, planning sessions, conversations about what the town deserved and what its future could look like. But beneath that calm surface was a growing determination: The town of Rockport and the Rockport Fire Department were ready to take ownership of its emergency medical care.

With the support of town leadership and the trust of its residents, the Rockport Fire Department set out on a mission that would reshape public safety for generations. The Department began the long, meticulous process of securing a State of Maine EMS license. And just one month later, the first visible sign of change arrived.

In October 2024, a two‑person duty crew began operating out of the Rockport Station, located on Main Street, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., responding to every medical call for service in town in Squad 25. They worked shoulder‑to‑shoulder with Northeast Mobile Health Services, the contracted EMS provider for the town, ensuring that no resident ever waited alone in a moment of need.

Then came a turning point: a loaner 2006 GMC Horton ambulance, assigned R23, rolled into town. It was not just a vehicle. It was a symbol. A promise that Rockport was preparing to stand on its own and provide an unwavering Emergency Medical Service to its residents.

To build this new service, the Department has established a wide network. Applications came in from across Maine and as far away as Rhode Island. Candidates sat for interviews, demonstrated their skills, and shared their passion for serving a community they hoped to call their own.

For the first time in Rockport Fire Department history, four full‑time Paramedics and four full-time Firefighter EMTs were hired. Eight people who would become the backbone of a new era, working twenty-four‑hour rotating shifts and responding to calls 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

On April 1, 2025, the Rockport Fire Department obtained its State of Maine Emergency Medical Services license and began providing full Paramedic‑level Emergency Medical Services, caring for its own residents.

Today, rescue twenty-five stands ready in the newly rebuilt West Rockport Station, located at 624 West St, staffed around the clock by one Paramedic and one Firefighter EMT. They are more than a crew; they are neighbors, guardians, and the first faces seen in moments when every second matters.

In their first year, the full‑time crew responded to 546 EMS calls within Rockport and forty-three mutual aid calls to surrounding towns. Every one of those calls represents a person, a family, a moment when help arrives because Rockport chose to invest.
